DHYG 104 General and Oral Pathology

This course will discuss general pathology with a special emphasis on oral pathology. Using radiographs and slides of pertinent structures, dental hygiene students will learn to recognize and identify abnormal conditions of the mouth and teeth. Emphasis will be placed on the intra and extra oral clinical examination of patients.

Course Objectives

1. 1. Categorize oral pathological lesions and give examples of lesions in each category.
2. 2. Identify the general characteristics of soft and hard tissue lesions.
3. 3. Compare the types of immunity processes and identify lesions associated with immune
   disorders.
   
4. 4. Recognize signs and symptoms of the body’s inflammatory response, including repair
   lesions associated with the process of repair after injury.
5. 5. Define vocabulary associated with genetics, methods of cell division, and describe
   disorders associated with each.
6. 6. Compare and contrast developmental, hereditary, and congenital disorders.
7. 7. Explain two categories of neoplastic growth; recognize specific tumors and the treatment
   and prognosis of each.
8. 8. Recognize developmental disorders affecting the face, oral cavity, and tooth structures.
9. 9. Differentiate between various systemic diseases and oral manifestations associated with
   each.
10. 10. Differentiate between primary and acquired immune deficiency diseases.
11. 11. Describe various diseases involving the oral mucosa and skin.
12. 12. List and describe the various salivary gland disorders and neck masses in terms of
    etiology, epidemiology, risk factors, clinical and microscopic features, treatment and
    prognosis.
13. 13. Complete the steps associated with the extra and intra oral examination/charting utilizing
    an examination form.
14. 14. Interpret dental radiographs for dental pathology.
