ARTT 114 Time-Based Media
This course will explore the moving image as an artistic medium. Projects will analyze techniques ranging from flipbooks, basic drawn 2D animation and stop motion to video, sound, and editing software-the aesthetic capacities of each will be fully explored. Emphasis will be placed on approaching each project with an expressive, artistic eye, and students will be encouraged to draw from many different media to create their work.

Course Objectives
- 1. Examine a moving image and identify the aesthetic and artistic principles in use.
- 2. Create a narrative story with a beginning, middle, and end using moving images.
- 3. Describe how motion affects the student’s medium of choice in both a theoretical and
practical way. - 4. Identify the advanced functions of a video camera and describe how these functions can
be used creatively. - 5. Demonstrate an understanding of video editing techniques and the ways in which they
can enhance an image. - 6. Analyze his/her own work and that of others with both a critical and constructive eye.
- 7. Formulate a personal visual aesthetic and adapt that aesthetic to varying project types.
- 8. Experiment with creativity and risk-taking in approaching video as a creative art form.
