MLTS-254 Microbiology Clinical Practice

Microbiology Clinical Practice consists of an internship at a sponsoring microbiology laboratory clinical site. Supervised activities in areas of microbiologic clinical analysis are meant to enhance the student's medical laboratory knowledge base with emphasis on professionalism, safety, problem-solving, and quality assurance.

Notes

NOTE: (3-week block of time at the clinical site for 8 hours per day, 5 days a week) Students are required to provide their own transportation to and from the varied clinical sites. Students must also be available for a clinical schedule that may include, but is not limited to, extended hours, alternate days, evenings, and/or weekends. The clinical schedule listed is a representation of one of the possible scheduling options.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Perform laboratory procedures in compliance with protocols utilized in a clinical microbiology
    laboratory.
  2. 2. Compare and interpret normal versus abnormal results.
  3. 3. Evaluate the need for follow-up testing when abnormal results are encountered.
  4. 4. Demonstrate compliance with professional and safety protocols.
  5. 5. Evaluate pre- and post-analytical processes encountered in the clinical laboratory.
