DMSU-212 Ultrasound Physics & Instrumentation II
In this course, lectures and related exercises cover the areas of ultrasonic propagation principles, imaging artifacts, and spectral and color-flow Doppler. Content will also include the interactive properties of ultrasound with human tissue, possible biologic effects, types of equipment and instrumentation, and safety and quality control.
Hours Weekly
2.5 hours theory, 2 hours on-campus lab weekly
Course Objectives
- 1. Categorize the components of an ultrasound system and their functions.
- 2. Differentiate sonographic artifacts and their causes.
- 3. Explain the bioeffects related to ultrasound exposure.
- 4. Evaluate performance measurements used in quality control.
- 5. Demonstrate diagnostic techniques for spectral Doppler analysis, color-flow, and continuous
wave. - 6. Interpret the flow patterns for each Doppler exam.
- 7. Measure areas of strengths and weaknesses in their understanding of ultrasound physics.
- 8. Assess the effect of system controls and transducer parameters on the diagnostic quality of an
ultrasound image. - 9. Demonstrate improved understanding of ultrasound physics and how physics can affect the
integrity of a diagnostic image. - 10. Demonstrate improved interpretative skills for diagnostic ultrasound, Doppler and
hemodynamic variables. - 11. Demonstrate improved preparation for the ultrasound physics credentialing exam.
