ENGL-212 By and About Women

This course provides a historical sampling of literature written by and about women. Students will critically evaluate a series of six novels for literary form and technique. Students will also analyze the validity of the female experience as portrayed in the literature. Students are expected to gain insight into not only the challenges but also the power of women in literature - and in life. This course is writing intensive.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Recognize literary terms, concepts, critical strategies and stylistic characters in literature by and about
    women.
  2. 2. Demonstrate critical and independent thinking in the interpretation of texts.
  3. 3. Write analytically about literary works, using appropriate research and documentation.
  4. 4. Demonstrate an understanding of ways the literature studied reflects its intellectual, social, historical, and
    cultural contexts.
  5. 5. Evaluate the power of literature to address personal values and goals and to challenge human endeavors.
  6. 6. Demonstrate an understanding of the unique contribution of women writers, as well as insight into female
    experiences as portrayed in literature.
