CHNS-222 Cultures of China
In this course, students will discover how Chinese language and cultures are expressed through family life, religion, fine arts, and history, and reflected in and influenced by its geography, demographics, and position in the global economy. This course is taught in English and does not fulfill world language sequence requirements.

Course Objectives
- 1. Identify various populations of China and the effects of climate and geography on the cultures
and people. - 2. Delineate the broad scope of history, focusing on life-changing events.
- 3. Analyze the impact of religion and philosophy on the people and institutions of China.
- 4. Recognize the main ethnic divisions and groups of China.
- 5. Demonstrate an understanding of the ancient traditions, values, and folklore as they exist in
the modern world. - 6. Understand the social structures in China, especially families.
- 7. Appreciate artistic expressions in art, architecture, ceramics, and calligraphy.
- 8. Interpret several major Chinese characters in discussing the origins of Chinese language.
- 9. Evaluate the impact of the political and economic systems.
- 10. Integrate cultural awareness and apply theoretical and methodological frameworks from the
humanities and anthropology in an analysis of Asian cultures.
