CARD-261 Clinical Internship

Practicum in a clinical setting. Students will refine clinical skills by active participation in a cardiovascular department. Opportunity will also be provided for observation in alternative sites for technologists in the field. On-campus seminar session includes opportunity for case study presentations relative to the field of invasive cardiovascular technology.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Enter the clinical setting prepared to successfully complete all required clinical objectives as stated in
    the clinical manual.
  2. 2. Recognize the causes and prevention of complications in the Invasive Cardiovascular Laboratory.
  3. 3. Identify and describe the major equipment used in the modern Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory.
  4. 4. List and describe current diagnostic and therapeutic procedures employed in the Invasive Laboratory
    and describe their indications and contraindications.
  5. 5. Perform the functions related to the scrub technologist in a left and right heart catheterization, including
    preparing and draping the patient.
  6. 6. Observe and assist the staff technologist during fluoroscopy.
  7. 7. Calibrate and operate the hemodynamic monitoring equipment during catheterization.
  8. 8. Effectively set-up and monitor an aortic balloon pump.
  9. 9. Assess a patient prior to a cardiac procedure.
  10. 10. Demonstrate the ability to perform a sheath pull without complications.
  11. 11. Demonstrate the protocol to follow during an emergency setting for a patient that needs to go to the O.R.
  12. 12. Recognize the causes and how to prevent complications in the invasive cardiac laboratory.
  13. 13. Demonstrate knowledge in the role of a CVT informing family members and their concerns about your
    patient.
  14. 14. Demonstrate the ability to complete advanced cardiac life support calls.
  15. 15. The student will be able to explain the stated objectives and demonstrate competence in each objective.
  16. 16. Successfully pass Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  17. 17. Identify and describe a congenital cardiac anomaly after completing a pediatric cardiology rotation.
  18. 18. Observe open heart surgery.
