HIST-916 Contemporary Africa
This course is a survey of the historical and cultural development of modern Africa. The course will focus on Africa's transition from a colonial hinterland to independence. The prominent issues to be studied include globalization, the impact of information, technology and trade in the modern world. Another issue is the associative problem of internationalization, particularly westernization and its impact on native and cultural attitudes. The challenge of regional diversity will also be examine together with the deep-rooted socio-economic problems of sub-Saharan Africa, including population expansion, challenges of disease (Malaria, Tuberculosis and HIV/Aids), the exodus of a trained workforce, regional civil wars and post-independence one-party politics. The relationship of Africa and the United Nations and the future of Africa will also be surveyed.
