NURS-122 Foundations of Nursing Practice

The student will develop and attain attitudes, knowledge and skills, both interpersonal and psychomotor, which are necessary to assist the patient in meeting health care needs. The curriculum framework and influence of the stress adaptation process on basic needs and nursing care is emphasized. The student will select general nursing actions and develop competencies required to deliver safe, technical nursing care to patients in long-term and acute care settings.

Prerequisite

Formal admission to the ADN Program or PN Certificate option. Specific admission criteria exist for the accelerated program. Prerequisites for ADN Nursing Program: BIOL-107 or BIOL-200, BIOL-203, CHEM-103, and MATH-122, MATH-138 or higher. Pre- or corequisite: BIOL-204, PSYC-200. Prerequisites for PN Certificate track: BIOL-107, BIOL-203, HEAL-105. Pre- or corequisite: BIOL-204, PSYC-200

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Utilize knowledge of physiology to identify alterations in function in patients experiencing common
    responses to stress.
  2. 2. Communicate with the health care team and patients to promote continuity of care.
  3. 3. Identify and describe activities that promote the profession of nursing.
  4. 4. Describe a holistic approach to the provision of nursing care for patients experiencing common
    responses to stress.
  5. 5. With guidance, demonstrate caring, integrity, safe practice and accountability when practicing the art
    and science of nursing.
  6. 6. Practice critical thinking strategies in the application of the nursing process.
  7. 7. Discuss how nursing care can be delivered in an effective and efficient manner, maintaining legal and
    ethical standards.
  8. 8. Summarize the impact of responses to stress on members of a multicultural society.
