DANC-277 High Intermediate Modern Dance Technique III
This course is a continuation of DANC-275 and DANC-276 and provides a continued reinforcement of the aesthetics of modern dance with emphasis on placement and alignment of the body and other preparatory work necessary for the maintenance of a sound technical foundation as well as the development of performance quality. This course emphasizes increasing technical proficiency, improving anatomical awareness, and developing deeper understanding of the skills and principles of various modern dance techniques. Students at this level must be competent at the intermediate level and ready to perform longer and more complex movement sequences that approach a fuller level of synthesis and performance qualities.

Course Objectives
- 1. Alignment: (continuing at a High Intermediate level)
a. Describe correct body alignment as it applies to modern dance techniques
b. Analyze correct body alignment as it applies to modern dance techniques
c. Demonstrate correct body alignment as it applies to modern dance techniques
d. Demonstrate sensitivity to the nuances of correct body alignment as it applies to modern dance
techniques
- 2. Anatomy/Kinesiology: (continuing at a High Intermediate level)
a. Identify basic anatomical landmarks (bony and soft tissue) and major muscle groups
b. Define the actions of major muscle groups and joints
c. Apply awareness of experiential anatomy and kinesiology to dance movements
d. Demonstrate an understanding of an anatomical and kinesiological approach to modern dance
- 3. Musicality: (continuing at a High Intermediate level)
a. Identify musical structures most used in modern dance
b. Classify modern dance movements according to musical commonalities
c. Perform modern dance movements with sensitivity to musical structure
d. Integrate musical knowledge and sensitivity into the creation of modern dance movement - 4. Synthesis and Evaluation: (continuing at a High Intermediate level)
a. Recognize body alignment and movement as pertaining to the various modern dance aesthetics
in self and others
b. Use one’s own awareness in order to self-evaluate and self-correct
c. Develop an objective-based plan for self-improvement
d. Measure one’s own progress through a written self-assessment
